How to renovate old wooden furniture?
1. Make preparations
1. First lay newspaper on the floor, then open the doors and windows to ensure adequate ventilation. Put the wooden furniture to be painted on the newspaper. Before you start, wear a mask and gloves.
2. Remove the hardware from the furniture with a screwdriver. If you're going to paint the chest of drawers or the dresser, remove the hardware before you start. This has two advantages: one is to ensure that the paint is not applied to the hardware; the other is to replace the hardware or paint it completely.
3. Repair the gap with gap, hole and dent with sealant (putty). Scrape off the excess sealant with a putty knife, and then let the sealant dry.
4. Sandpaper the surface of the furniture. This is done to remove the protective varnish or paint from the surface of wooden furniture to make the primer more easily attached to the furniture. If there are uneven places in the place where the sealant is applied, sand paper shall be used to fully polish the place, so that the place where the sealant is applied and other parts of the furniture shall be kept flush.
5. After polishing the surface of the furniture, gently wipe it with a clean coarse cloth to remove the residue and make the furniture surface clean and tidy. If necessary, use mild detergent and then dry the furniture surface with a cloth.
2. Start priming and painting
1. If you want furniture to look uniform in color, apply a primer. Apply a layer of primer to the surface of wooden furniture with paint brush and roller. The paint brush is used to brush the edge, corner and hard to brush area; the roller is used to roll the large and uniform area without wavy shape. Wait for the primer to dry before painting.
2. When the primer is dry, polish the surface with fine-grained sandpaper. Sanding can make the paint adhere to the primer better.
3. Start painting, first with roller, then paint brush. If possible, roll the uniform part with the foam roller, then repaint it evenly with the paint brush. Pay special attention to the places where the roller cannot be brushed, such as the corners. When the paint is dry, check to see if there is any incomplete paint.
4. Apply another coat of paint if necessary. According to professional painters, one coat of primer and paint is not enough to produce a professional effect, wait for the first coat to dry (preferably overnight, at least 6 hours), and then apply the same paint again using the above method.
5. Apply protective paint (optional). When the paint is dry, apply varnish or sealant on it to avoid scratches and scratches. This can also add a slight luster to the furniture.
6. Wait for the paint to dry out and the painting will be finished!
Tips:
1. You can use acrylic paint, so you don't need to brush protective paint after spraying, because acrylic acid itself can provide enough protection.
2. Add some paint to the primer so that the primer will be thicker and reduce the possibility of wood grain leaking out.
